2013 Northeast Guest of Honor

E. Christopher Abruzzo was appointed by Governor Tom Corbett to serve as Acting Secretary of the Department of Environmental Protection, beginning April 15, 2013.

Most recently, Secretary Abruzzo served as a Deputy Chief of Staff to Governor Corbett. In this role, he was responsible for overseeing the activities of nearly 20 commonwealth agencies and commissions, among them DEP and the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. Abruzzo played a key role in developing and implementing several major initiatives at DEP. This included the agency’s reorganization in 2011, which lead to the creation of the Oil and Gas Deputate and the implementation of the Permit Review Process and Permit Decision Guarantee in 2012. Abruzzo’s initiatives were aimed at increasing DEP’s capability in achieving its mission to protect public health and the environment. Additionally, he was actively involved in appointing key administrative and executive staff at DEP.

Mr. Abruzzo brings 20 years of public service experience to DEP. He was elected in 2007 to serve as a member of the Derry Township (Dauphin County) Board of Supervisors, and has served as chairman of the board of supervisors since 2010. Abruzzo was appointed in 2008 to the board of the Derry Township Municipal Authority which oversees the township’s wastewater systems, interceptor lines, sewage treatment plant, and the treatment and disposal of industrial waste. He served as chairman of the authority board in 2010 and 2011. While chairman, he was instrumental in directing the township’s response to flooding caused by catastrophic storm events Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee. Abruzzo’s 6 years as a local government official give him a unique understanding of the many issues and challenges that municipalities encounter as they strive to implement best practices and meet environmental standards and regulations.

Prior to serving in the Governor’s Office, Mr. Abruzzo was a Chief Deputy Attorney General in the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office. Abruzzo supervised the Drug Strike Force Section as well as the Medicaid Fraud Control Section during his 15 years of service in the Attorney General’s Office.
