Christopher GuithChristopher Guith – SVP Policy – Institute for 21st Century Energy, U.S. Chamber of Commerce

Christopher Guith is senior vice president for policy at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Institute for 21st Century Energy (Energy Institute). He is responsible for developing the Institute’s policies and initiatives as they apply to the legislative, executive, and regulatory branches of the federal and state governments. Specifically, Guith leads the development of the Energy Institute’s policies and messaging relating to oil and natural gas and nuclear energy. He led the Chamber’s Shale Works for US campaign, which analyzed and promoted the widespread benefits of shale energy development in America.

Claudia Cattaneo is the Western Business Columnist at the National Post, where she covers business and policy issues shaping enterprise across the West. Claudia previously served as the Financial Post’s Calgary Bureau Chief, specializing in energy coverage, and has worked at the Calgary Herald, the Montreal Gazette and the Toronto Star. Born and raised in the Valle d’Aosta region of northern Italy, Claudia has an undergraduate degree in journalism from Ryerson Polytechnic University in Toronto, a Master of Science (Political Science) from the Université de Montréal and has taken the Canadian Securities Course.

Dr Wenran Jiang

Dr. Wenran Jiang – Mactaggart Research Chair – University of Alberta

Dr. Wenran Jiang is Director of Canada-China Energy and Environment Forum and its annual conference since 2004. He is also a Political Science Professor at the University of Alberta, Wilson Centre Global Fellow at the Woodrow Wilson International Centre for Scholars in Washington DC, and Special Advisor on China to the US and Canada based Energy Council. Dr. Jiang was partially seconded to Alberta Department of Energy as a special advisor on Asian market diversification from 2012 to 2014. Before taking a partial leave from his tenure at the U of A, Dr. Jiang was the Founding Director (2005-08) and Inaugural Mactaggart Research Chair (2008-11) of the University’s China Institute. Alberta Venture magazine named Dr. Jiang as one of the 50 most influential people in Alberta for 2014.

Ephimios “George” Sgouromitis – Corporate Manager, HSS&E – Gibson Energy Inc.

Ephimios “George“ Sgouromitis, CRSP joined Gibson’s Energy Inc. in 2010 and holds the role of Corporate Manager, HSSE. Gibson Energy is one of the largest independent midstream energy companies in Canada, and an integrated service provider for the oil and gas industry in the USA. George sits on the Board of Directors for the Alberta Association for Safety Partnerships (AASP); a certifying partner for Certificate of Recognition (COR) programs. He has been a Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) since 2010. As a committee member within the Canadian Standards Association (CSA), George also supports the creation and publication of the now published consensus based CAN/CSA-Z246.2-14 – Emergency preparedness and response for petroleum and natural gas industry systems standard, and has recently joined the CAN/CSA-Z246.1-13 – Security management for petroleum and natural gas industry systems committee as well. Previous to his time with Gibson’s, George was responsible for HSSE with Baker Hughes Canada as their Northern HSSE-Safety Professional for all business units in their service portfolio. George moved into HSSE fulltime during his tenure with Hexion Chemicals (formerly Borden Chemicals) where he carried portfolios that included Technical Sales/Service, Canadian Accounts Manager, Canadian Research and Development Manager and Canadian-Product Steward Industrial Hygiene.


Fred Hutchings

Fred Hutchings – Senior Vice President – Maxxam Analytics

Fred’s mandate is to identify opportunities and evaluate growth strategies that will allow Maxxam to expand its services to meet the emerging needs of our customers in petroleum, oil sands and related fields. He is a strategic leader with success in international business operations for large and mid-sized corporations, with a unique and complementary background in venture capital financing and private equity investing. His career has included international assignments in the U.S. and West Africa.


Garth Braun

Garth Braun – CEO/President and Director – Blackbird Energy

Mr. Braun brings to Blackbird more than 30 years of diversified business experience in oil and gas, finance and real estate. Over the past several years, Mr. Braun has led Blackbird through the successful acquisitions of Ruger Energy Inc. and Pennant Energy Inc., the divestiture of Blackbird’s Bigstone Montney asset for proceeds of $8.9 million, the accumulation of a significant 81 section Elmworth Montney land position and the drilling of Blackbird’s first two Elmworth Montney wells. In addition, Mr. Braun was instrumental in Blackbird raising over $50 million of capital. Mr. Braun was previously the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of an international oil and gas company and a principal of a private real estate development company that completed over $1 billion in development.


Hilary McMeekin

Hilary McMeekin – Account Director – Edelman

Hilary is a senior communications practitioner with over 20 years of experience in a broad range of sectors and disciplines and a passion for organizational story telling. At Edelman Calgary, Hilary is a member of the management team and is supporting efforts to build Canada West’s energy sector business. In the past 12 years, Hilary has led communications teams within the oil and gas, electricity, agriculture and health care sectors. As a communications generalist, Hilary enjoys working with clients to create communications programs that support business strategies. She has experience in building, implementing and measuring integrated communications programs that include employee engagement and change management, investor relations and financial communications, community and stakeholder relations, community investment, digital communications, advertising and collateral development, issues management and crisis preparation and management. Hilary’s education includes a Bachelor of Arts in communications studies from the University of Calgary, a two year specialty diploma in public relations from Mount Royal University, and the Canadian Securities Course. Additionally, she has won a “Gold Quill Award of Excellence” and the “Jake Whittmer Award” for effective use of communications research from the International Association of Business Communicators. Hilary is an avid reader and skier and loves spending time outdoors with her family.

Joshua McHaffie

Joshua McHaffie – General Manager – PVT Performance Vac & Tank Ltd.

Josh grew up on a ranch in Penticton, BC. His family relocated to Southern Alberta in 1996 and sold their operation in 2000. Josh pursued a diploma of Agriculture majoring in animal science and graduated from Lethbridge Community College.
Josh started his oil & gas career in Grande Prairie in 2010 as a Swamper for Radium Industrial Solutions. He quickly moved up as an Operator of steam, vacuum, combination, pressure and hot oil units. Josh became an employee of Performance Vac & Tank as a Hot Oiler Operator. He ran the company’s first twin heater unit in 2011-2012, prior to moving into a Dispatcher role. He later became an Assistant Manager.
In 2013 Josh accepted the position of General Manager. Josh continues to thrive in a leadership position focusing on internal promotion. This belief has helped to build a safety conscious culture that collectively believes in quality.

Mark E. Stanley has worked in the oil industry as a hydraulic fracturing expert for 37 years. He started with Arco right out of college where he studied Chemical Engineering. He went back to college to get his MBA in 1987 and went to work as a partner with Clear Water in 1989. Working at the partner level gave him a more hands-on relationship with the industry and he learned to use his knowledge and background to fine-tune products to meet the specific needs of customers. During this phase of his work he developed patents for several products that are still used in the industry today. To the extent possible he wanted to focus on products that would not harm the environment and that would reduce customer’s need to meet EPA standards in handling them. He believed that ultimately the ability to reduce costs by reducing hazardous waste constrictions would serve the interest of both sides of any argument.


Michael OlinekMichael Olinek – Vice President of Finance – Calfrac Well Services Corp.

Mike Olinek is the Vice President, Finance at Calfrac Well Services Ltd., an independent provider of fracturing, coiled tubing and cementing services in Canada, the United States, Russia, Mexico and Argentina. He is a Chartered Accountant with over 25 years of experience within corporate finance teams at global multi-billion dollar public companies. Mike has been with Calfrac for over eight years and oversees a team responsible for financial reporting, budgeting and forecasting as well as treasury and financial risk management.

Peter KujawanskiPeter Kujawanski – Consul General – United States of America for Alberta

Peter Kujawinski arrived in Calgary on August 23rd 2012 to take up his post as Consul General for Alberta, Saskatchewan and the Northwest Territories for a three-year term. Peter is a career diplomat who joined the U.S. State Department in 1998. His previous assignments include postings to U.S. Embassies in France and Israel. He also was posted to the U.S. delegation to the United Nations Security Council in New York. In his most recent assignment to the U.S. Embassy in Haiti, he worked as political counselor and coordinator of U.S. assistance promoting governance and rule of law.


Professor Barry Cooper

Professor Barry Cooper – University of Calgary

Barry Cooper, a fourth generation Albertan, was educated at Shawnigan Lake School, the University of British Columbia and Duke University, where he received his doctorate in 1969. He taught at Bishop’s University, McGill, and York University before coming to the University of Calgary in 1981. For the past twenty-five years he has studied western political philosophy, both classical and contemporary. Much of his teaching has focused on Greek political philosophy whereas his publications have been chiefly in the area of contemporary French and German political philosophy. Over the years he has spent considerable time in both countries, teaching and doing research.


Professor Duane Bratt

Professor Duane Bratt, PhD – Department Chair Department of Policy Studies – Mount Royal University

Duane Bratt is Chair and Professor in the Department of Policy Studies at Mount Royal University (Calgary, Alberta). He was educated at the Universities of Windsor (BA 1991, MA 1992) and Alberta (Ph.D 1996). He teaches in the area of international relations and Canadian public policy, with specialty in the sub-field of Canadian foreign policy. His primary research interest is in the area of Canadian nuclear policy. Recent publications include: Canada, the Provinces, and the Global Nuclear Revival (McGill-Queen’s University Press: Montreal and Kingston, 2012) and co-editor, Readings in Canadian Foreign Policy: Classic Debates and New Ideas 2nd edition (Oxford University Press: Toronto, 2011). Duane is also a regular commentator on political events.


Quinn Holtby

Quinn Holtby – Founder, President & CEO – Katch Kan

Quinn Holtby is the Founder, Owner and Chief Executive Officer of Katch Kan Limited, a company that has an impressive track record of successful innovation to facilitate protecting lives and Mother Earth. Quinn Holtby began working on drilling rigs in the late 1970’s as a roughneck. He quickly worked his way up to a drilling position and drilled for several years on a wide variety of rigs. In 1986, after witnessing many near fatal accidents, mostly as a result of the slippery work conditions due to uncontrolled fluid discharge on the drill floor, Quinn decided to do something about it. Giving up a successful career in drilling, he decided to pursue his ideas of minimizing accidents on the drill floor while at the same time protecting the environment. Since then, Quinn has pioneered – and continues to pioneer – an extensive array of leading-edge products and services that are fast becoming recognized industry standards by improving safety and environmental responsibility while minimizing risk and maximizing performance. Quinn was the recipient of the Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the year award 2014
